Two Mice: Evolution of a Cover

Two Mice, the adorable new picture book from author / illustrator Sergio Ruzzier published earlier this fall and received rave reviews, including a starred review in Kirkus and a starred review in The Horn Book. We are delighted that it’s also appeared on the below “Best of” lists for 2015:

  • Washington Post Best of 2015
  • Kirkus Best of 2015
  • Horn Book Fanfare 2015
  • Boston Globe Best of 2015
  • Huffington Post Best Picture Books of 2015

Congratulations to Sergio and to all of the other talented authors and illustrators on these lists!

We asked Sergio if he could tell us a little bit about the evolution of the jacket for the book.

Below is an image of the first concept for the book jacket. Sergio liked the interaction between the two mice, but it was ultimately decided that the jacket should be a bit more dynamic:

“What a cute, clever way into number sense.” The New York Times Book Review

“The inventively undulating narrative structure, the sherbet-like color palette, fantastic tile floors, countless tiny visual surprises–and last but not least, the comfortingly resilient mouse friendship–make Two Mice a standout.” Shelf Awareness
