About the book:

Flowers Are Calling by Rita Gray, illustrated by Kenard Pak blends art, science, and poetry in a unique and rhythmic picture book perfect for Earth Day and Poetry Month this April.

As author Rita Gray says, “Botany should never be boring.” A great gift book for young nature lovers, Flowers Are Calling merges nonfiction with rhyming poetry and expressive watercolors. This book illustrates the marvel of natural cooperation between plants, animals, and insects by identifying specific flowers and pollinators and describing the ways in which they each play their part in the forest’s cycle of life. The end result is an entertaining and educational book that can be read on multiple levels.

Gray and Pak’s previous collaboration, Have You Heard the Nesting Bird, is a finalist for the 2015 AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize in the Children’s Science Picture Book category and a Huffington Post Best Picture Book of 2014 Honorable Mention in the “Best Read Aloud” category. The book received multiple starred reviews and Booklist called it “a beautifully crafted, informative picture book.” Flowers Are Calling brings that same synergy of art and science to life yet again with a spring-inspired topic.

“Pak’s pretty, digitally worked watercolors achieve equilibrium between stylized reduction and naturalistic verisimilitude.” —Kirkus

“A sophisticated blend of scientific information and artistry.” —Publishers Weekly
