Today for #MiddleGradeMania, we have the author of THE VAN GOGH DECEPTION on the blog! Take it away, Deron.
The book/person/thing that inspired me to be a writer is:
My children inspired me to write books. I wanted to share with them the wonders of the world as I saw it. I developed a great passion for Shakespeare, and found that the easiest way to share that passion with them was in the form of a mystery novel. My latest book — The Van Gogh Deception — allowed me to share my love of art in a similar way.
The hardest thing about writing for a middle grade audience is:
I have actually found it quite easy. I suspect that this is because I have yet to grow up.
Why do you like writing middle grade books?
Because middle grade readers are not cynical and are open to new ideas.
What will middle grade readers like about your books?
My main characters are kids who do great and wondrous things. The characters constantly defy the limited expectations that adults set for them.
My least favorite subject in school was:
Chemistry — because I didn’t appreciate how important it is.
My favorite snack:
Ice cream — preferably with lots of chocolate chunks in it.
The best thing about my job is:
I get to go to a lot of really cool places and meet a lot of really cool people.
One piece of advice for your middle grade self:
Don’t be afraid to fail. Take chances. Set goals beyond your reach.
