We’re so excited to share this exclusive interview with HERCUFLEAS author Sam Gayton for #MiddleGradeMania! See below to learn about the writing process and fun facts about Sam. Thanks for joining us, Sam!
The book/person/thing that inspired me to be a writer is:
Ted Hughes’s The Iron Man – a brilliant, fantabulous book that I can re-read again and again.
The hardest thing about writing for a middle grade audience is:
Grown-ups asking me: “And do you think you will ever write a book for adults one day?” Ugh, grown-ups. Whoever would I want to do something boring like that?
Why do you like writing middle grade books?
Because they are filled with all the best things in life: adventure, mischief and wonder.
What will middle grade readers like about your books?
The main hero literally poops himself with fright. Twice.
My least favorite subject in school was:
Sport. But I now love sport so maybe I just needed some time to get my head in the game.
My favorite snack:
Chocolate hob-nobs and tea. Do you have hob-nobs in the US? If not, come visit England and we can show you how dunkalicious they are.
The best thing about my job is:
Getting emails from readers who want to know what happens to characters after the book ends. I know then that the story will stay with them for a long time and that’s the best feeling ever.
One piece of advice for your middle grade self:
Don’t try and dress / act / speak like everyone else.
Where can we find you on the internet? (Social media, website?)
