From book to screen: Movie news for The Testing, Graceling, and The Little Prince!

Big news! Several of our favorite books will be making their way to the silver screen!


The Testing news:

Paramount Pictures has acquired The Testing, a novel by Joelle Charbonneau. Deal got made last night, with no producer attached, and it was Peter Kang’s first acquisition since moving to the studio from Fox. The book will be published this week and already has been named a #1 Indie Next 2013 Summer YA Pick and one of the Top 10 Young Adult Books for Summer by USA Today.

Casting news for a big-screen animated version of The Little Prince:

James FrancoRachel McAdamsJeff BridgesBenicio Del Toro, Mackenzie Foy and Paul Giamatti are on board to voice characters in a big-screen take on The Little Prince, the classic French novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

The story centers on a pilot who crash-lands in the Sahara desert and comes across a little boy who says he is a prince fallen to Earth from his home on an asteroid. As the pilot repairs his plane, the little prince regales him with stories about his home and the foolish inhabitants of nearby asteroids.

Bridges will voice the pilot. It was not revealed which roles the other actors were taking on. Marion Cotillard has the offer to voice the part of a rose.

Graceling news:

gracelingIndia-based Reliance Entertainment is heading to “Graceling,” acquiring feature rights Kristin Cashore’s young-adult fantasy trilogy as a film franchise starter in partnership with Kintop Pictures.

“Graceling” was published in 2008 as the first installment of a trilogy, followed by “Fire” and “Bitterblue.” It centers on young woman who lives in a world where select people born with an extreme skill — called a Grace — are feared and exploited. She carries the burden of the Grace of killing and, as the king’s niece, is forced to execute his dirty work.
